Join friends and neighbors for a special Memorial Day ceremony to honor those who have served our country and paid the ultimate sacrifice.
This year’s event features keynote speaker John Mallo who has been a member of the Eden Prairie community since 1979. Mallo served in the U.S. Army after being drafted in 1970, including a year stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War era, and was honorably discharged in 1972.
In 2006, he was among those who helped bring forward the idea of creating a memorial for veterans in Eden Prairie. With support from the City Council, a committee of 27 local veterans came together to guide the effort, raising $500,000 over two years to make the memorial a reality.
Eden Prairie’s Veterans Memorial was dedicated November 11, 2008. The memorial is notable for its inclusion of photos and biographies honoring Eden Prairie service members who lost their lives in war. The committee also helped establish the City’s annual Memorial Day program, which continues to provide an opportunity for reflection and remembrance.
The program also includes patriotic music performed by the Eden Prairie Community Band, and recognition of local veterans.
