Sustainable Eden Prairie is an ongoing effort focusing on education and implementation of sustainable practices to protect the environment and natural resources our community enjoys.

Building upon the success of the 20-40-15 initiative, the City is leading by example and providing a foundation for residents and businesses to carry out sustainable practices in four areas — energy, landscape, waste and water.

City Announces Sustainable Eden Prairie Award Winners

Awards recognize significant and innovative investments that contribute to the overall vitality and sustainability of the community.

The City of Eden Prairie recognized Sustainable Eden Prairie Award winners at the Nov. 1 City Council meeting.

The Sustainable Eden Prairie Award recognizes significant and innovative investments that contribute to the overall vitality and sustainability of the community.

Student Sustainability Commission members Tyler Little, Maura Fitzgerald, Suchita Sah, Taylor Oliver, Tanvi Bhujle and Mia Cain presented the awards.


Energy

John and Dawn Fedora installed a rooftop solar energy system and an air source heat pump to cool and heat their home using electricity. They also own a hybrid vehicle, participate in composting and have a chemical-free lawn.

Rod Fisher is very active in reducing the energy use of his home and is converting his home equipment that uses natural gas to be powered by electricity instead.

He installed both a heat pump water heater and electric dryer, as well as an energy use tracking system for his home.


Landscape

Marcia Kolb and Johnny Severson have been restoring the shoreline of their property on Mitchell Lake for two years. They installed native plantings and stabilized the slope to the lake to stop erosion. They are committed to helping their native plantings survive and keeping invasive species out.

They also take every opportunity to share their project and inspire others to do the same.


Waste

William Weiher embraces the five Rs of repair, reuse, repurpose, recycle and renewable energy as much as possible, and enthusiastically shares his lifelong interest in sustainability with his two children.

He encourages his family to reduce food waste and compost the rest, which he then uses to add nutrients to his yard. He also has an interest in energy-efficiency and native plantings.


This award program aligns with the City's Sustainable Eden Prairie initiative, an ongoing effort focusing on education and implementation of sustainable practices to protect the environment and natural resources our community enjoys. The four nomination categories reflect the initiative's focus areas — energy, landscape, waste and water.
