ALWAYS Take Your Keys!

auto theft prevention

Do you have the habit of leaving your keys in your car? If so, it’s time to make a change!

Sixty percent of the cars stolen in Minnesota in 2022 had the keys inside them, and many were unlocked. Stolen cars are taken from driveways and open garages at all times of day and night.

Car thieves are opportunistic and quick. They look for unlocked cars and open garage doors then steal vehicles in a matter of seconds.

In 2022, the EPPD responded to 56 reports of stolen vehicles, most of which were taken from residential driveways or garages, where car keys had been left inside the cars.

Here are four easy ways to help prevent car theft from happening to you: 1) do not leave a spare key in your car; 2) always close and lock all windows and doors; 3) park in well-lit areas; and 4) avoid leaving valuables inside your car.

We would also like to remind residents to call 911 to report any suspicious activity. We rely on the public to serve as additional sets of eyes and ears. Many criminals have been caught due to the quick thinking of residents who have called 911 to report something suspicious.
