The 2024 election season is underway and campaign signs are popping up everywhere.
The City is often asked where non-commercial signs, including campaign signs, can be placed and for how long. Simply put, non-commercial signs can be placed year-round on virtually any private property where permission has been obtained, if they comply with local and state regulations.
In election years, Eden Prairie’s sign ordinances are superseded by Minnesota state law during the 46 days before the state primary election until 10 days after the General Election. This means from June 28 through Nov. 15, non-commercial signs of any number and size are permitted, so long as they comply with Eden Prairie’s regulatory requirements.
The following is a partial list of the locations and types of signs that are prohibited:
- Public property, which includes, but is not limited to, City parks and other City property/facilities, public schools, county and state properties
- In street rights of way, which are typically the first 10-15 feet back from the curb for City streets and quite a bit more for county roads and state highways, bridges and overpasses
- On other signposts such as street or directional signs
- Trees, shrubs or utility poles/boxes
- Church/religious organization properties with tax-exempt 501 (c)(3) statuses
- On Election Day, campaign signs may not be placed within 100 feet in which a polling place is located
- Types of signs prohibited include roof signs, inflated devices, banners, pennants, whirling devices, dynamic displays, and any painting/drawing on rocks or other natural features
While some may look at taking campaign signs as a harmless prank, it is actually theft. Many local races are funded entirely by the candidates and the theft of a $15-30 sign can add up quickly when multiple signs are taken. We are all entitled to our political views, which are protected in many ways, including state statutes surrounding theft and trespassing.
For additional information on what constitutes a sign violation, or how to file a complaint, visit the Campaign Guidelines page on the City website.
Reminder: Beginning Nov. 16 Eden Prairie’s regular sign ordinance will be in effect. Residential properties will still be permitted to display non-commercial signs (including campaign signs) of any number year-round, but the total area of all yard signs on the lot or parcel of record may not exceed 6 square feet and 3 feet in height.
