Highlights of e-Bike State Law
- Riders must be at least 15 years old
- e-Bikes are subject to the same traffic laws as regular bikes
- Riders are not required to have a license, registration or insurance for their e-Bikes
State Law e-Bike Requirements
- Must have two or three wheels, a seat and fully operable pedals
- Electric motors must be 750 watts or less
- Cannot be modified to change the motor-powered speed capability
- Meet e-Bike class 1, 2 or 3 requirements:
Class 1 — electric assist up to 20 mph with no throttle
Class 2 — electric assist up to 20 mph with a throttle
Class 3 — electric assist up to 28 mph with no throttle
Safety Tips for All Bike Riders
- Always wear a helmet
- Put away mobile devices and headphones to avoid distraction
- Yield to slower traffic and pedestrians
- Use safe speeds, slow down when approaching intersections, curves and hills with limited visibility
- Pass on the left and give an audible signal when passing
- Travel as close as possible to the right edge of the road
- Wear bright colors and reflective gear, and use lights to increase visibility
While riding on concrete sidewalks is legal, it is not recommended. Riding on asphalt trails is encouraged.
