The EPPD is currently recruiting police cadets to serve in a uniformed apprentice-type position assisting in various community service-oriented activities and police officer support services.
This position provides learning opportunities and inter-departmental mentorship with the goal of being promoted to a police officer at the conclusion of the program. Cadets attend an approved Professional Police Officer Education (PPOE) program, are working to obtain an associate degree, or are in the last two years of earning a bachelor’s degree in an approved program.
Police cadets work a flexible part-time schedule at the Police Department in conjunction with their schooling. Typical working hours are 15-20 a week, including day, evening, weekend and holiday hours. Hours vary based on business need and are subject to increase May through September. Duration of assignment is two to four years, depending on education sought.
To support the goal of being promoted to police officer, the City provides the following benefits:
$25/hour
Direct payment of tuition to a qualified institution for a two-year degree, up to $12,000 per year
Direct payment of tuition to a qualified institution for the last two years of a four-year degree, up to $12,000 per year
EMT Training and Certification while working for the City if available, or based on budget and class availability
Earned Sick and Safe Time
Police cadets may do monthly ride-alongs with sworn officers and attend training with officers when appropriate. Cadets support the Police Department by responding to a variety of community needs including animal control, enforcement of parking violations and other ordinances, performing fingerprinting services, providing traffic direction and assisting officers with other service-related duties.
