How Immigration Operations in MN Relate to Eden Prairie

Eden Prairie is proudly home to one of the largest populations of Somali residents in Minnesota, who are an essential part of what makes our community so exceptional.

Recent reports of immigration officials targeting the Somali population in the Twin Cities have understandably created fear and uncertainty in our community. It is important for all Eden Prairie residents to know our Police Department (EPPD) enforces only state and local laws — not federal immigration laws. If federal immigration enforcement activity occurs in Eden Prairie, the EPPD will not participate.

It is also important to note:

  • The EPPD is prohibited from asking about a person’s immigration status — this applies to everyone, including suspects, victims and witnesses.
  • The EPPD is prohibited from providing information to anyone attempting to identify an immigration violation, including federal agents seeking assistance.
  • The EPPD does not hold or detain a person solely for a federal immigration agency.
  • The EPPD is not typically notified of federal operations.
  • If protests or gatherings occur, the EPPD may respond only to ensure safety and protect everyone present.

“As things evolve in the coming days and weeks, the City of Eden Prairie and our Police Department will continue to do what we do for all our residents — protect, serve and work tirelessly to ensure safety and security,” said Mayor Ron Case. “We are committed to respecting the rights of all who call Eden Prairie home.”

“To our Somali friends and neighbors — and to all our immigrant communities — you are valued, you belong here, and your safety and wellbeing will always be our priority.”

Edited Dec. 6 to add:

The Eden Prairie Police Department does not have the authority to enforce federal laws and is therefore prohibited from doing so. The points outlined above apply to all local law enforcement across the country.
