On Thursday, Dec. 11, John Charles Brecount of Eden Prairie was charged in Hennepin County District Court for the hit-and-run incident that injured a mother and her children Aug. 21 on Mitchell Road.

Brecount was charged with two felony counts of Criminal Vehicular Operation-Great Bodily Harm for "Gross Negligence" and "Driver Who Causes Collision Leaves Scene."

As released Aug. 29, Brecount — a leader in the local faith community — served as a volunteer chaplain with the Eden Prairie Police and Fire Departments at the time of the incident. He was not volunteering on Aug. 21, nor has he served in that capacity since.

“We are heartbroken by this incident and the impact it has had on the Kamawal family,” said Eden Prairie Police Chief Matt Sackett. “Our thoughts are with 2-year-old Somaia Kamawal as she continues to heal and recover from her injuries.”

The EPPD would like to thank the Minnesota State Patrol for handling the investigation.
