Contest winners are recognized at a City Council meeting and featured on the City's website and social media platforms. Cash prizes are made possible through the generous support of the Eden Prairie Community Foundation. Learn more and submit contest entries by Tuesday, Jan. 20 at edenprairiemn.gov/WordsInAction.
State Legislators Meet With City Leaders
At this week's City Council workshop, state legislators Sen. Steve Cwodzinski, Rep. Alex Falconer and Rep. Carlie Kotyza-Witthuhn joined us to discuss Eden Prairie's priorities for the upcoming legislative session. Discussion topics included local zoning authority and housing, funding for the regionally beneficial public safety response garage, public safety priorities and the state-local fiscal relationship.
Fire Hydrants Help
Please remember to clear out your neighborhood fire hydrants of snow and ice. Quick access is vital when the EPFD is responding to a fire.
Christmas Tree Disposal Options
Ready to say goodbye to your Christmas tree?
- Option 1: Call your waste hauler to see if they offer curbside tree pickup – many do.
- Option 2: If curbside pickup isn’t available, Dakota Prairie Composting in Shakopee (12386 Chestnut Blvd ) is accepting trees for free through Jan. 30. Learn more.
As a reminder, Eden Prairie's Yard Waste Site is only open seasonally and does not accept Christmas trees.
Reduce Salt Use this Winter
Salt used on roads and walkways pollutes local lakes, streams and wetlands, which negatively affects water quality. You can help protect Eden Prairie's water resources by decreasing your salt usage. Start by shoveling well and if you need salt, scatter it widely. If the temperature is below 15 degrees, salt will not work so use sand instead. Finally, collect any undissolved salt and store it in an air-tight container for reuse. Learn more at edenprairiemn.gov/ReduceSaltUse.
Snow Removal in Eden Prairie
So far this winter, Eden Prairie has received 18 inches of snow over 19 snow events. At this time last year, only 7 inches of snow had fallen.
- Once snow accumulates to 2 inches, full-scale snow and ice removal operations begin.
- The City is divided into 18 snow-plow routes, with a plow operator assigned to each route for the whole year. Operators are on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- The City's 19 plow trucks are tracked by GPS during snow events, which make it possible for trucks to be reassigned to assist others when routes are completed early.
- In a typical snow event of 4 to 5 inches, plow operators can clear the City’s 234 lane miles of roadways in 7 to 8 hours.
- When low temperatures are predicted, operators treat roads with a chemical called Beet Heet – made from a byproduct of producing beet juice – to ensure salt remains effective and to minimize icy conditions.
- Eden Prairie’s plow team boasts one of the lowest salt rates in the state. All members of the plow team are Smart Salt-Certified through the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the City is also Smart Salt Level 2-Certified.
The City is fortunate to have such a dedicated, knowledgeable plow team committed to minimizing environmental impacts.
