Building upon the success of the 20-40-15 initiative, the City is leading by example and providing a foundation for residents and businesses to carry out sustainable practices in four areas — energy, landscape, waste and water.

Going back to school is an exciting time because everything’s new – teachers, fellow students, school supplies. However, National Geographic Kids encourages children and parents to “go green” this school year by reusing last year’s school supplies and considering the following suggestions:

  • Ride your bike or walk to school
  • Buy canvas and cardboard binders instead of plastic
  • Buy recycled paper
  • Use reusable water bottles instead of disposable plastic
  • Use a lunch box, not paper bags
  • Donate last year's clothes instead of throwing them away
  • Buy online to avoid driving
  • Turn your computer off when you're not using it
  • Make your own bookmarks
  • Organize a clothes swap with your friends
  • Carpool to sports
  • Use refillable pens and pencils
  • Reuse your old backpack
