Eden Prairie Local News
The Eden Prairie Local News (EPLN), a new, nonprofit, citizen-run, and reader- and business-supported media organization, is up and running at eplocalnews.org. It is preserving local reporting on matters related to the City, school district, sports, business and other topics in the wake of the 46-year-old Eden Prairie News closing in April 2020.
A group of concerned Eden Prairie residents began meeting almost immediately and they, along with many others who are lending their expertise in journalism and business, are creating a nonprofit model that will be digital at first and rely on volunteers until there’s enough financial support from the community to pay professional staff. The group says that filling the local-reporting void is important because studies link news consumption with higher civic engagement, including voter turnout and volunteerism. And, pursuing the nonprofit model that’s seeing some success across the country may give EPLN a better chance at succeeding.
Until the Eden Prairie Local News achieves 501(c)(3) status, it is using the Eden Prairie Community Foundation as its fiscal sponsor. Tax-deductible donations to the Eden Prairie Local News Fund can be made through the Foundation.
