Prescribed Prairie Burns Planned

City Parks and Natural Resources Division staff members, with assistance from the Fire Department, are conducting prescribed prairie burns through mid-May.

Each prescribed burn is expected to last one to three hours, dependent upon weather conditions. Staff members monitor weather conditions closely and coordinate with the state Department of Natural Resources to determine ideal conditions.

Prescribed burns help to rejuvenate growth and ensure long-term survival of the native prairie by controlling invasive plants. After burning, the ground will appear charred, but plant regrowth will still occur in the spring and produce a variety of new species.

Prescribed Burn Locations

  • Birch Island Park
  • Miller Park, east of Field 8
  • Purgatory Creek Park shoreline
  • Water Storage Facility, 8251 Eden Prairie Road
  • Water Treatment Plant, 14100 Technology Drive
