New Pedestrian Safety Beacons Installed
Two new Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) have been installed at busy pedestrian crossings — one at Dell Road and Erin Bay, and another at Anderson Lakes Parkway and Amsden Way.
These beacons help alert drivers when someone is about to cross the street. When a pedestrian or bicyclist pushes the button, bright flashing lights turn on to signal drivers to stop. The lights stay on long enough for people to cross safely and are paired with the standard yellow pedestrian crossing signs used throughout the City. Studies show that RRFBs, when used correctly, significantly increase the number of drivers who stop for pedestrians.
This project was a team effort across several City divisions. The Police Department identified a state safety grant, which the Engineering Division applied for and secured $64,000 to fund the beacons. Engineering also designed the crossings, and the Streets and Utilities Divisions installed the RRFBs. The City plans to install two or three more RRFBs each year to continue improving pedestrian safety.
