Firefighter Relief Association Pension

Every Duty Crew member of the Eden Prairie Fire Department is eligible for membership in the Eden Prairie Firefighter Relief Association, which provides a benefit of $15,000 per year after a minimum of 10 years of service.

Example of Retirement Benefits

10 years of service — $560 per month or $150,000 lump sum
15 years of service — $840 per month or $225,000 lump sum
20 years of service — $1,120 per month or $300,000

If eligible, retirement benefits can start no earlier than 50 years of age. Other benefits include disability, and survivor benefits for spouses and family members. Contact the Fire Relief Association with questions.

Because the Eden Prairie Fire Department provides a critical service to the community, it must take every precaution to select the best possible candidates.

• 18 years of age or older
• High school graduate or equivalent
• Hold valid State of Minnesota driver’s license to maintain active membership
• Able to carry out responsibilities and provide good communications in a calm, positive and professional manner under emergency conditions
• Successfully complete the comprehensive screening process including pre-employment drug test, oral interview(s), police background investigation, physical examination, physiological evaluation and physical agility test

Firefighters are not required to live in Eden Prairie, nor are they required to live within a certain distance of an Eden Prairie fire station.

The purpose of the Eden Prairie Fire Department training program for new recruits is to give a full understanding of basic firefighting techniques as well as emergency medical response procedures for basic life-saving activities.

Those who complete this training become certified firefighters and medical responders.

Training Program

• Firefighter I, Hazmat Operations and Firefighter II during initial six months (160+ hours, twice a week)
• Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)/CPR during initial 12 months (40 hours)
• New members may begin to ride emergency vehicles as fourth person after training begins
• After completion of basic courses outlined above, many opportunities are available to further firefighting and emergency response skills on topics such as Apparatus Operator, Emergency Medical Technician, Building Construction, Fire Inspector, Advanced Firefighting and Fire Prevention
• Additional training is approved by the station captain, training captain and training chief, and paid for by Eden Prairie Fire Department
• Ongoing weekly training after initial training has been completed (3 hours per week)
