The City of Eden Prairie develops its budget on a two-year cycle.

The City budget funds the services residents and businesses rely on every day, including police and fire protection, streets, water and sewer, parks and recreation, and many other City services. The budget also supports the care and maintenance of more than 1,000 acres of parkland and 225 miles of sidewalks and trails.

During the first year of the two-year budget cycle, the City develops budgets for the following two years. The City Council formally adopts the first-year budget each December. During the second year of the cycle — which coincides with the first year covered by the budget — staff reviews and updates the second-year budget to reflect significant changes before the City Council formally adopts it.

Budget priorities are shaped by City Council discussions with staff, past financial results and resident input, including Quality of Life Survey data, online engagement and direct communication with the City.

While the City Council takes final action on the budget each December, budgeting, financial planning and review take place throughout the two-year budget cycle. Residents are encouraged to attend City Council meetings and workshops where the budget and other financial matters are discussed.
