Building community is one of the most powerful ways to counteract bigotry, fear, distrust and hatred.

Here is how you can help:

• Actively welcome diversity into your life and community.
• Build relationships your neighbors and fellow community members.
• Talk with your children, family and friends about how to identify discrimination and how to be an active bystander and community advocate.
• Become involved with your schools, community groups and law enforcement to make your neighborhood a safe place for all people.
• Participate in community-sponsored diversity events and activities and encourage others to join you.
• Reach out and support impacted individuals and their communities.
• Listen to the concerns of those impacted, assist with their needs and respect requests for privacy.

Purpose

Act in an advisory capacity to the City on matters of diversity, civil and human rights, and the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Enlist the cooperation of agencies, organizations and individuals in the community to promote awareness and appreciation of diversity
• Review and investigate alleged ADA violations submitted to the City via the ADA Grievance procedures
• Work with community volunteers to promote the City’s Manifesto and provide response and support to victims of incidents of bias

Membership

Seven to nine members-at-large appointed by City Council.

Term Lengths/Dates

Typically three-year terms, with exceptions as determined by the City Council. Terms start April 1, terms end March 31.
