Home MenuStormwater and Surface Water
Rain or snow that falls on hard surfaces – such as streets, driveways, parking lots and roofs – drains to storm sewers and then to lakes and rivers. This water is called stormwater or runoff.
Pollutants such as dirt, trash and nutrients are carried by stormwater. The stormwater and its pollutants flow to lakes, creeks, ponds, wetlands and other water bodies – all considered surface water. In this way, stormwater becomes surface water.
Because stormwater can carry pollutants to our surface waters, it is important to keep it clean.
Rules outlined by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) guide Eden Prairie’s stormwater practices.
